May 07, Aida Ghazar rated it it was amazing. In a very short story, he tells the story of a poor vendor,who fails to “move” in a crowded street when told so by a gendarme,so he gets arrested and is taken to the court.

The gendarme tells his side of the story so masterly that ,the poor man wonders and then believes that may be he really had told so. However after serving a year in prison ,he gets out unhealthy and poorer and with no earning. After sometime he comes to the conclusion that he was safer in prison ,at least he was fed. While there he discovers that he gets regular meals and has decent shelter, something he is unaccustomed to. When he is released, he is shunned as a criminal by his former customers and his life spirals downward to even greater destitution.

It is a sad tale of a poor man that franec that his society really has no use or care for him. This is a story where the reader should be aware of the historical context before reading it.
