I just really enjoyed seeing everybody’s favourite Gauls back in action. A bit like seeing a very good friend for the first time in years. Would I recommend this? Of course, it’s the only Asterix you’re going picyes read that you haven’t read before, and the art is so similar that the handover between generations is just about seamless.
I’m hoping there will be lots more of these. View all 3 comments. Manca un po’ del mordente a cui ci aveva abituato la vecchia gestione, ma le gag sono godibili e la storia scorre piacevolmente. Asterix and the Picts is the fi Asterix was my favourite comic chezz a kid, and one of the first I ever read that turned me on to comics for life. Asterix and the Picts is the first non-Uderzo Asterix book. Rene Goscinny – one half of the Asterix creative team – died in the s but Albert Uderzo continued producing the books, writing and drawing them. So how is the first non-creator created Asterix book?
The really weird thing about this book is the stuff that you normally see in an Asterix book, replicated perfectly here. The Pirates make their obligatory appearance and surprisingly still managed to make me laugh: So why only a lukewarm reaction to it?

This is the first Asterix album not featuring the work of Goscinny or Underzo and I therefore approached it with trepidation; would it be any good? Would the new artist capture the style and likenesses well?
Would the new writer be sympathetic to the history of 34 preceding volumes? Short answer; yes to both. Ferri conforms more closely to the Uderzo formula, with our heroes travelling abroad for an adventure that pokes gentle fun at national stereotypes and cultural touchstones, whilst thwarting a Roman plot and bringing back some of the traditional aspects of our characters, like their very short tempers, which fell by the way somewhat when Uderzo was writing.
On the other hand, Uderzo’s more outlandish, fantastical ideas are not entirely abandoned, either, with a predictable character showing up ,es turning out to be a tremendous addition to the story. A really good first effort by the new team – I’m now looking forward happily to more from them.

As with probably most here, I am a huge fan of Goscinny’s genial tongue-in-cheek narrative of Gauls, Romans, and humans in general. Also of Uderzo’s brilliant visual capture of Goscinny’s grand vision. I also loved all stories by Uderzo, up until ‘Asterix and the Magic Carpet’, after which something changed. That said, in my opinion, up until ” While I appreciate As with probably most here, I am a huge fan of Goscinny’s genial tongue-in-cheek narrative of Gauls, Romans, and humans in general.
While I appreciate the work presented here, which I enjoyed reading, and while I lles Goscinny’s and Uderzo’s shoes are extra-large, I was sad to see the story and illustration lack the original conviction and confidence they did in decades past. A bit like the new ‘Star Wars’ movies. With such a great legacy, I would have wished for the story to include some of the fiery wit, polished narrative and character displayed by this tiny tich and fatman who isn’t fat in ages past.
That said, some of the lacklustre here may be due to a poor translation into English — not sure. Also, the drawings didn’t quite capture the essence of the original characters. Some of the ladies Impedimenta, Mrs. Sad to see Uderzo go. But the greatest void, I thought, was the story itself.
They should go back to basics and re-visit Goscinny’s and Uderzo’s original formulas. I love all their books.
Go ye and do likewise! Capture our imaginations again! Make them fly, go to other planets, or simply stay at home That said, it was great to be able to see the boys back after so many years.
Merci Messieurs Ferri et Conrad. Dec 29, Mark rated it liked it Recommends it for: When it was released this comic was on my radar for some time, as an avid reader of the more European orientated comics of which Asterix has been one of my favorites from way back to my youth.
In fact reading the classic Asterix tales these days I see still a lot of things I missed before probably due to growing older. And in truth Uderzo and Gosinny did write a classic series that is not easily surpassed. Currently one my favorite comic series is in the middle of its last publication due to the When it was released this comic was on my radar for some time, as an avid reader of the more European orientated comics of which Asterix has been one of my favorites from way back to my youth.
Currently one my favorite comic series is in the middle of its last publication due to the fact that the artist has chosen to enjoy his pension. As such I did enter the discussion of his series should be continued and how does one keep the same quality?? In the case of this new Asterix both the writer and artist are new and yet they keep the quality and expectation fullfilled.
All the regular stuff passes by including the poor pirates that end up swimming as usual. And more important the reason of why the monster of Loch Ness is seen so rarely. It is certainly not a better book as those from the original writer and artist but it also does not fail in entertaining. I find this new book easily better than some of the solo-works by Uderzo who remained the sole original for some albums.
Well worth your time and a welcome return for our Gaul friends and a promise for the future that there will be more to come. And that does pleases me a lot.
Asterix and the Picts (Asterix, #35) by Jean-Yves Ferri
No le he dado 5 estrellas porque como ya he comentado, me han faltado algunos romanos mas Dec 30, Christopher Francis rated it it was amazing.
Considering a new artist and new author has stepped in to continue the vision of this brilliant ageless series, the album deserves 5 stars. The illustrations are flawless, just like Underzo’s. The story, is different, but engaging nonetheless.
