The genus Turnera contains more than species native to tropical and subtropical America. It was previously placed in the family Turneraceae.

I was at a clients house today fixing some water issues and she has a small garden. In that garden she had some nice flowers.

Familia: Turneraceae

Damiana Turnera diffusa, syn. Turnera aphrodisiaca is a shrub native to Central and South America. It belongs to the family Turneraceae.

Blooming with small yellow flowers, the shrub has an odor somewhat like chamomile, which is due to an oil present in the plant. The leaves have traditionally been made into a tea which was used by native people of Central and South America for its reputed aphrodisiac effects. Turnera species generally show heterostyly, with two forms in the population: The difference in flower form is accomapnied by an incompatibility mechanism – pollen from the same flower form or “morph” will not fertilize the ovules and become swollen and burst partway down the style.

Only crosses between different morphs are fertile. Coloured with basic fuchsin and fast green Lewis’s stain. This image shows compatible pollen tubes near yurneraceae base of the style, growing straight, without irregularities. These successfully fertilize the ovules. Rain from the night before had just dried so I let the turneracae sunlight wash over the blossom by temporarily holding a shading palmetto frond aside.

The flower is about 50mm across. Turnera ulmifolia has several medicinal uses and has shown promise in the battle against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections.

It can be found listed as a member of the Turneraceae or the Passifloraceae. Juno Dunes Natural Area. A small sulphur refueling on a Piriqueta blossom after a brief sun shower at Juno Dunes Natural Area.
